In 1988, for six months, Brisbane hosted the 23rd World Exposition.
The capital of Queensland, the Australia's Sunshine State was the happiest place on earth and a
focus of world attention.
Under the theme 'Leisure in the Age of Technology', World Expo 88 provided a unique
showcase of man's progress toward the year 2000.
For six months the city was living in a special atmosphere. Brisbane probably became more busy that
it never was before. Each day a spectacular evening fireworks display and laser show along the
south banks of Brisbane River.
The site of the Expo is now called South Banks Parklands.
It is a public place extending on 17 hectares where you can easily spend a full day.
The river's bank has been transformed and is now the unique beach in the city that looks like a
Tropical Island. Add to this some picnic and BBQ area and the scene is ready.
The place is also well known for its Crafts Village. Do not miss it! Each Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
an interesting array of market stalls is creating a bustling marketplace in Stanley Street Plaza and
along the ENERGEX Arbour. The Art & Craft I present everywhere and it could be a good opportunity for
you to buy the perfect gift or souvenir 'Australia Made'.
Dining options are also available. With more than 30 restaurants, cafes and bars,
visitors to South Bank can dine at a different establishment every day of the week!
South Bank has the cuisine and location to suit all tastes, appetites and budgets.
