| Located 190 kms. north of Brisbane, Fraser
Island is known as the world's largest sand island. The
island covers an area of 184000 kms and its natural features
include extensive beaches, magnificent coloured sand cliffs,
scenic creeks, freshwater lakes and a diverse variety of plant
communities.
Access to Fraser Island
is possible from Hervey
Bay, via barges, aircraft, commercial tours or private
boats.
It is important to know that four-wheels-drives are the only
practical means of vehicle transport on the island. If you
do not have a 4WD, you can hire one
on the mainland or book on one of the available day tour.
Hervey Bay is also the good starting point to catch a whales
watching tour (July till November). Several
options are available from from Hervey Bay. Starting from
dawn you can chose a half, a three quarter or a full day tour.
The type of vessel is also your choice.
Some operators prefer to stay away from the mass tourism
and are offering 'something different'. You should perhaps
consider to join such a tour. One of these, the Blue
Dolphin is owned and operated by Peter Lynch.

Peter, for example, with his 15 years background as a mammal
trainer in Seaworld can for sure provide you a very different
approach to the Humpback Whales and can make your day a memorable
one.
