A Day on Fraser Island
Located 190 kms. north of Brisbane, Fraser Island is known as the world's largest sand island. The island covers an area of 184000 kms and its natural features include extensive beaches, magnificent coloured sand cliffs, scenic creeks, freshwater lakes and a diverse variety of plant communities.

Chris & KimAccess to Fraser Island is possible from Hervey Bay, via barges, aircraft, commercial tours or private boats.

It is important to know that four-wheels-drives are the only practical means of vehicle transport on the island. If you do not have a 4WD, you can hire one on the mainland or book on one of the available day tour.

Hervey Bay is also the good starting point to catch a whales watching tour (July till November). Several options are available from from Hervey Bay. Starting from dawn you can chose a half, a three quarter or a full day tour. The type of vessel is also your choice.

Some operators prefer to stay away from the mass tourism and are offering 'something different'. You should perhaps consider to join such a tour. One of these, the Blue Dolphin is owned and operated by Peter Lynch.

Peter, for example, with his 15 years background as a mammal trainer in Seaworld can for sure provide you a very different approach to the Humpback Whales and can make your day a memorable one.

Crystal Clear Water

Fraser Island is a fragile environment. Its foundations, formed by erosive forces are subject to continuous process of build-up and erosion. In such a fragile sand environment man can easily disturb the natural balance causing erosion and pollution.

The Queensland environment has recognised the need to manage and ensure long-term protection of its natural resources and scenic attractions. Part of the measures taken are the obligation of obtain permit for all vehicles accessing the island.

Sands formations are one of the most prominent features of the island. Contrasting with the white beach sand you find also the Teewah Sands.

The Teewah Sands are the traditional coloured sands, yellows, browns and reds.

The Maheno (fraser63.gif)

Fraser island is also noted for its shipwrecks. The number of vessels known to have been lost in or around these waters, must be something of a record.

Driving on the beach you can not miss the wreck of the Maheno.

If you like the nature and have the opportunity to stay longer than one day on this unique island, do not hesitate, do it. It is the only way to really discover the beauty of this very special place on heart.
