Cities & Places - MELBOURNE (Victoria)
|
Lost in town I have the souvenir of friendly people who help
us to find our way to the Royal Botanical Garden.
The Royal
Botanical Garden, 41 ha., more than 12.000 species of
plants, one of the most beautiful example in the world. But ....
it was not the best moment to visit the place, begin September
is still to early. Anyway the place is great and we would like
to have the opportunity to see it during summer time.
|
We do not spend much more time in Melbourne.
We are driving south, by the Princess Hwy. and just after
Dandenong, taking the Sth. Gippsland Hwy. on the right, further
the Bass Hwy. to reach Anderson. From there, Phillip Island
is easily accessible.

Different interesting attractions on Phillip
Island, the Dairy Centre Museum, the Kinglake Gardens
Wildlife Park, the Koala Sanctuary, and ...of course
the famous Penguin
Parade. To enjoy most of them, more than one day is
required but accommodation
is available on the island.
We are starting our visit of Phillip Island by the Koala
Sanctuary.
A place where you walk in the forest, look attentively around
you, specially at the top of the eucalyptus trees, and if
you are lucky you will see some koalas, free in the nature.
We saw several of them, but I have to say that except the
pleasure and the excitement to see them free, in the nature,
there is not a lot to see. Sleeping at the top of the trees,
half hidden by the leaves, you can not expect to see them
very well.

But the major attraction of the island is of course the Penguin
Parade at Summerland Beach. Every day, a colony of Fairy
Penguins is coming back from the see to their burrows
on shore. The Fairy Penguin (33 cm high) is the only penguin
to breed in Australia.
It is really amazing to follow their progression in the ocean
with the help of the rangers radar, to see them coming
out of the water, to finally walk at few meters from you to
go back to their burrows.
The day after we are leaving the island.
